About us

Hey there Hungarian-learner, Budapest-explorer and Hungary-lover! We’re so happy you found this page. Catch Budapest was a project run by the two of us – Juli and Flo. We started it to help you learn Hungarian smarter and gain the confidence to speak and converse. All our tips are based on our personal experiences with learning multiple languages, as well as Flo’s adventures with learning Hungarian.

While this part of our lives is over and Catch Budapest is no longer active, feel free to browse all the amazing articles and resources we wrote and collected throughout the years.

We are neither linguists nor teachers but we are firm believers that everyone who wants to can learn Hungarian, regardless of location, age, “bad language genes” and other myths.

We have created lots of Hungarian lessons, written plenty of articles, and have published two books since we started running this site in 2017.

If you’re not sure where to start reading and exploring our site, here are a few ideas:

Take a look at our mini-lessons. These are short articles focussing on one particular aspect of the language that you can grasp in less than an hour.

For example, we have collected the 10+5 most essential Hungarian verbs here.

You can learn the present tense in 30 minutes here.

Click here to learn the most useful conversational phrases here.

End your struggles with the prefix “meg-” here.

And here are 500+ international words in the Hungarian language you can use as your safe vocabulary base.

Together with fellow Hungarian learners we have also created our own Hungarian courses – the Smart Hungarian Audio Course which is ideal if you want to learn the language with authentic, native audio material.

learn hungarianThe Smart Hungarian Short Stories Course will teach you Hungarian through the magic of stories. It comes with an interactive ebook that’ll help you understand Hungarian’s unique grammar concepts, like sentence structure, suffixes, prefixes, and more.

We like to have fun when learning – it is what always keeps us going.

Here is a fun list of 23 awesome Hungarian words that don’t exist in English.

And here are 35 reasons you should bother learning Hungarian that will always motivate you.

33 Hungarian Histories - CoverIf you’re interested in the history of Hungary and the essence of being Hungarian, check out our book 33 Hungarian Histories. It’s a collection of 33 witty and funny essays about 33 essential Hungarian personalities. It’s the right book for you if you want to dive under the surface of the Hungarian culture and history but don’t want to pore over long and boring history books.

And for now – enjoy your time on Catch Budapest!
