Mini Hungarian Lesson: We Need to Talk About the Hungarian Word “Hogy”

According to all frequency lists we have encountered, hogy is always among the top 10 most frequent Hungarian words (along with a, az, és, and egy), ranking long before igen (usually around place 20).

You might’ve noticed, that hogy can appear in some very peculiar constellations, e.g. twice in a row (as hogy hogy, or even hogyhogy), or as a syllable of another word, such as ahogy. It’s time we bring some light into the dark around the versatility of hogy.

First of all, it’s important to know hogy is this common, because it has two very separate but important roles:

1. The conjunction „that“
2. The adverb „how“

Let’s see what this means.

Hogy HogyThat vs. How

The distinction between the two separate meanings of hogy is most obvious when it appears twice in a row (hogy hogy), first as that, and second as how:

Még nem tudom, hogy hogy megyek ma éjjel haza.
Yet not know-it-I, that how go-I today at-night home.
I don’t know yet [that, i.e. the answer to the question] how I’ll get home tonight.

Hányszor mondjam még el, hogy hogy kell csinálni?
How-often tell-shall-I yet away, that how need to-make?
How many more times shall I tell you [that] how this needs to be done?

Hogy as That

Most times, however, you’ll encounter hogy on its own, either as that or as how. Here are two examples for hogy as the conjunction that.

Tudom, hogy még nem akarsz hazamenni, de muszáj.
Know-it-I, that yet not want-you to-home-go, but necessary.
I know that you don’t want to go home yet, but you have to.

Képzeld el, hogy a tengerparton vagy.
Imagine-it-you away, that the sea-on are-you.
Imagine that you’re at the sea.

Hogy as How

Here are three more examples for hogy on its own, this time acting as how.

Ezt hogy mondják magyarul?
This how say-they Hungarian-as?
How do you say this in Hungarian?

Hogy hívnak?
How call-they-you?
What’s your name (ie. How do they call you)?

Hogy csináltad meg ezt a feladatot?
How made-it-you this the exercise?
How did you solve this exercise?

Hogy as In Order To, So That

There is one more, a little less frequent but nevertheless important meaning of hogy: In order to or so that.

Azért sminkelek, hogy szép legyek.
That’s why make-up-I, in-order-to beautiful be-should-I.
I put on makeup in order to be beautiful.

Azért vártam rád, hogy együtt menjünk.
Therefore waited-I onto-you, so-that together go-shall-we.
I waited for you so that we can go together.

Hogy as a Syllable

Apart from standing on its own you’ll also frequently encounter hogy as a syllable (part of a word). Here’s a list of all applications of hogy as a syllable with an example sentence for each:

dehogynem – but of course! (literally: but-how-not)

– Nem jössz este? – Dehogynem!

– Go-we evening cinema-into? – How-not go-should-we?

minthogy – than, as in “rather than” (literally: than-how)

Rather down-lie-I early, than not can-shall-I other-day-on to-get-up.

Translation

I woke up at 5, so I’m very tired. I don’t know how I’ll survive this day but I already know that it’ll be a long one. I hope I won’t (lest I) fall asleep at work! I drink a coffee (in order) to feel better. Still, I rather wake up early than work until late.

“Do you want another coffee?”, my colleague asks.
“Of course!” I reply. “I won’t stay long today.”
“How come?”
“I woke up at 5 and am here since 6. The presentation won’t go well.”
“But of course it will!”, she says and motivates me.

In the end, everything goes well, so (that) in the afternoon I go home tired but happy. I go to bed early tonight, (in order) to have a better day tomorrow.

You’ve got to be kidding me! No wonder a friend once remarked that he would ever learn to speak Hungarian like a Hungarian.
